This album features noise tracks demonstrating two electronic noise instruments, Bearcat and Rustee.

Yantra is an individual sound artist who designs, builds and performs electronic noise instruments. Yantra's work is both independent and collaborative. The purpose of this experiment is to design rich textural noise instruments using techniques based around Max/MSP, Arduino, circuit bending, and hacking. Seeking to collaborate with local Philadelphia musicians, Yantra forms visions of the ways that custom electronic noise instruments can enhance a collaborator's performance and sound.

Bearcat is an electronic noise instrument created by Yantra. Bearcat is a light sensitive controller paired with a custom software instrument built in Max/MSP. This instrument outputs glitches, drones, and broken beats. Bearcat allows the user to load eight of their own audio samples onto the instrument. The samples are accessed by buttons on the controller and are modified using hand gestures in the air above the controller. The hand gestures are picked up by light-reactive sensors (photoresistors/photocells) on the controller that modify samples into textural glitches and drones.

Rustee is another electronic noise instrument created by Yantra. Rustee is wooden chiptune instrument that outputs thrashing ‘bit-like’ noise. The voice of the instrument is a hacked and modified graphing calculator chip. The face of the instrument shows five black, rusty screws and one metal hook. A flexible conductive string is used to tie around the hook. When Rustee is performed the user stretches and pivots the conductive string along the rusty screws. The amount of screws touched and the pattern they are touched in modifies the output noise by the instrument.
